The Nomading Film Festival (NoFF) is driven to unite travelers and inspire travel through the magic of film and was started on the belief that traveling shapes us, defines us and connects us. 

We think of travel less as leisure and more as a unique opportunity to explore the planet and engage those living therein, and with today’s technology, we believe anyone with an iPhone, flip camera or point-and-shoot can tell a story worth sharing.

Outdoor Photo Expo

I’m in Charlottesville, Virginia this week for the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph. Turns out the festival isn’t just about peace, love and photography… it’s also about escaping this insane hotness. Seriously, it gets hot as hell over here on the East Coast in the summertime. Something I can sometimes forget as a girl from the Pacific Northwest. But this week I’ve taken a tip from my Southern friends: move (a lot) slower, sip on a cool drink all day long and find a sweet, cool swimming hole to dip into whenever you can.

I’m staying with my good friend and iLCP wunderkind Jenny Nichols while I’m here. Ms. Nichols is a smoothie-making machine. Upon arrival, jet-lagged and loopy, Jenny handed me an incredible concoction of coconut, cacao nibs, banana and almond. That and a shower fixed me right up. With it being so crazy hot, we’ve swapped out many sit-down meals with cold, smooth meals in a glass. Here’s a couple of recipes to get you started… keep in mind, the key is to not measure out your ingredients. Let your taste guide you and throw in whatever you can find in your kitchen!

Jenny’s Coconut + Cacao Awesomeness

1 or 2 bananas (you can peel and freeze banana chunks beforehand to make your smoothies a bit thicker)

A handful of cacao nibs

A handful of almonds

Coconut water — add enough to blend up the other ingredients smoothly

If you want to get a little spicy, shake in some cinnamon or if you’re feeling really crazy, give it a kick with some chili pepper. Yum!

Jenny’s “We’re Driving to Charlottesville” Fruity Breakfast

1 or 2 bananas

LOTS of berries: try a mix of whatever you have on hand or have a craving for… blueberries, strawberries, raspberries…

Frozen peaches

Orange juice — add enough to blend up the other ingredients smoothly

Want to make it more healthy? Try throwing in some kale or spinach for a green boost. And for a protein and omega kick, try hemp seed powder or flax seeds.

It’s no secret that coffee gets me through my day, so this time of year, I turn to gloriously tall glasses of iced coffee. Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top and oh boy does that tasty drink give me the pick-up I’m looking for. So, I was really excited when I found this fabulous recipe for Vietnamese Coffee Popsicles. I like to avoid cow milk, so here’s my version of the recipe…

1 big French press full of strong black coffee

Honey

Coconut milk

Popsicle mold

Boil water and make a big French press full of strong black coffee. Pour still hot coffee into a bowl and stir in honey to taste. Pour in coconut milk until the coffee lightens a bit. Keep in mind you want your pops to be more creamy than icy, so make sure you add enough coconut milk. This is your first layer.

Pour enough coffee into each pop to fill the pop ~1/3 full. Place popsicle sticks in pops and freeze for a couple of hours until firm.

Add a few more spoonfuls of coconut milk to the coffee. Cover and refrigerate while the first layer is freezing.

Next, fill pops to ¾ or so. Freeze again for a few hours.

Mix the remaining coconut milk with the honey until it is thick and sweet. Top popsicles off with the mixture, leaving an inch or so of popsicle stick sticking out from the top, and freeze one last time.

Unmold pops by running under warm water for a minute or two. Enjoy before they melt!

It’s no secret that we LOVE Mountainfilm. Like, we really love it. It’s not just about the inspiring films and people that we see here, it’s about the community that this festival represents. We’ve spent the last couple of weeks in Telluride and we’ve had a chance to get to know some of the Mountainfilm family better. A major shout-out and high-five to Jenny Jacobi (above left) and David Byars for letting us crash their home for the last week. You two are fabulous! And of course, we have to give another shout to our new BFF Justin Clifton for throwing down with us here, There… and everywhere!

Baby Champ of Scraper Bikes accepts 5 Point Jury Special Selection

Gratitude.

That may have been the one word that everyone walking out of the auditorium at 5 Point Film Festival felt on Sunday. After the second round of a live performance by climber and artist Jeremy Collins, set to his film The Wolf and the Medallion, it was hard to come away with any other emotion.

It got me thinking about what gratitude stands for. Collins’ film plays out as a letter from father to son, and in the first screening I immediately focused on my own relationship with my parents, two people that were instrumental in shaping who I am and what I love.

But in the second go around on Sunday night my mind drifted to the gratitude I have for wider circles.

Gratitude for the creativity that sustains this industry.

Gratitude for people we had never met before but opened up their house and let us crash in their beds, use their kitchen and make ourselves at home.

Gratitude for the sense of community that permeates the air at festivals like these, reminding you that you are surrounded by like-minded individuals that take four day fueled inspiration and will actually do something with it.

Gratitude for people that choose a different path.

Gratitude for the souls that live by Collins’ words to live by, “if something terrifies you, it’s probably best to pursue it.”

Gratitude for the support that encourages people to jump, and when they do, allows them to fly.

That’s what 5 Point has been for me: a celebration of passion and inspiration fueled by an unfathomable amount of creativity. Now it’s time to go forth, take that energy and do good things with it. And I am grateful that we all feel so empowered to do so.

Baffin Babes giving a presentation on their 2009 expedition

Two words: Baffin Babes.

We’ve been following the adventures of the Baffin Babes — a group of four Scandinavian bad ass women who skied 1,200 kilometers across Baffin Island in 2009 – for quite some time now. So when we were told that we’d be rooming with them at 5 Point Film Festival we had a few minutes of school girl giddiness. It’s not everyday you get to hang out with rocking ladies like this.

On Friday night, Vera, Emma and Inge led us through a multimedia presentation documenting the trials and tribulations of their Baffin Island trip, covering everything from polar bears, chocolate and arctic skinny dipping. But what’s inspirational about these ladies is how laid back and down to earth they are, mere promoters of pursuing any kind of adventure, no matter the length or nature of it. As Emma said recently in an interview, “adventures don’t need to be long expeditions, you can have lots of adventures in your everyday life.”

That’s the kind of badass inspiration that we need more of in the world. (And they’re so cool that we invited them to spend a couple of days in the Airstream with us… they said yes.)

And once again, there were the films. Another evening of inspiring, adrenaline inducing works that push creative limits. Stories that give you a newfound appreciation of life:

All told on the big screen in a room full of supportive, like-minded souls.

Over the last year, we’ve had the chance to attend both Mountainfilm and Wild & Scenic Film Festival. After attending festivals like these, it’s hard not to believe in the power of documentary films to do some good in the world. Tell a compelling story, rally people around a cause and give them tangible ways to take action. Yes, yes and yes.

Which is why we’re very excited to be getting some of these excellent films in our hometown.

Dirty Oil: Director’s Screening

Tar sands. Ugh. Seems like every week we’re talking about how much we hate them and what we need to do to stop it.

Dirty Oil sheds light on the subject. This feature documentary, narrated by Canadian actress and environmentalist Neve Campbell, goes deep behind-the-scenes into the strip-mined world of Northern Alberta, Canada.

The Greatest Migration

Bag It

Finally! I missed Bag It at Mountainfilm last year and I’ve been kicking myself ever since. Thank god for Surfrider, Oregon League of Conservation Voters, Environment Oregon and others for working hard to get this film here, and in turn highlight the current consideration of a statewide ban of single-use plastic bags.

The film will be screening March 4-13, with the gran premiere on the first night, complete with the bill sponsors, junk to funk fashion, and VIP guests.

Our friend John Waller over at Uncage the Soul Productions is one fo the brains behind Photo of the Year, and it’s such a cool contest/event/initiative that we decided to post about it here and encourage you to take part!

An annual photography contest benefitting natural science education through the MESD Outdoor School Program, in Portland, Oregon. So not only do photogs get to show off their skills, but money raised goes to support getting kids outside. A worthy cause in our minds! Since its inception, POTY has raised over $49,000 for the school!

Want to take part? Easy.

1. Go to POTY website.
2. Submit your photo before January 5, 2011. The $15 submission fee gets you 5 entries.
3. Take part in the online voting process which happens from January 9-16, 2011.
4. Wait for winners to be revealed at POTY event on January 22, 2011.

POTY winner not only gets well deserved fame and recognition, but a cash prize of $500. So hop on over, pick your best photo, and take part!
